Summary Assignment, Draft #1

Based on the article ‘Duo That Turns Plastics Into Concrete Idea.’ Goy (2016) has stated that BlueRen scientist and co-founders, Wong Chui Ling and Aravind Muthiah, have discovered an environmentally friendly method to convert plastic waste into ‘carbon nanotubes’ by using different minerals as a catalyst during recycling. In 2014 alone, there were 869 000 tonnes of plastic waste and only 9% of it were recycled. This figure is unchanged since 2001. BlueRen’s approach has resulted in a 10% yield. Ms. Wong said that these nanotubes are lightweight yet durable so it could be used as an additive in concrete making. It helps to strengthen the concrete thus reducing the use of cement by 30%. Mr. Aravind also states that they are looking at pushing BlueRen for commercial use so as to improve the worth of plastic waste into a higher value product.
